piratpet: MAME ROM Information.

History:

Pirate Pete (c) 1982 Taito.

In Pirate Pete, players take on the role of a red-haired pirate, with an interesting purple outfit (real pirates never wore purple).

- TECHNICAL -

Pirate Pete used the familiar 'Taito Classic' cabinet that was used for a variety of early 1980's games. This was a rather short cabinet, and had a monitor that was laid back at more than a 45 degree angle. Most of these cabinets featured the same painted side-art which consisted of an ornate border and a 'Taito' logo. Many other early Taito games will plug right into the machine without modification (although the board-sets for these early games tend to be expensive). The marquee to this title showed a 'Pirate Pete' logo, surrounded by images of treasure and pirate ships.

- TRIVIA -

Released in November 1982.

This game is another reworked version of "Jungle King". Here's what makes Pirate Pete different from "Jungle King" :

* An opening musical theme is used in certain parts of the game instead of the opening Tarzan yell (unlike in "Jungle Hunt", it is NOT the same one used at the end of the ocean stage).

* The player character is a heroic pirate instead of the Tarzan character.

* In the first stage, the player swings on ropes between ship's masts instead of vines between trees.

* The second stage is set in an ocean infested with sharks, instead of a river infested with alligators and crocodiles.

* The third stage adds a new enemy - snakes. They appear at the top of the screen and will kill the player if he touches them while jumping.

* The enemies in the fourth stage are sword-wielding pirates instead of spear-chucking cannibals.

NOTE:

- The clone Pirate Pete is totally different to Jungle King.

Bugs:

- piratpet, junglek, jungleh: First time you load the game, no attract mode sound. Thenasty (ID 01170)

WIP:

- 0.143u7: Andrew Welburn added clone Jungle King (alternate sound).

- 0.140u2: Andrew Welburn added clone Jungle Boy (bootleg).

- 23rd November 2010: Smitdogg - A few days ago Andrew Welburn dumped a bootleg of Jungle King with the title screen crudely hacked to read "Jungle Boy".

- 21st December 2009: Smitdogg - Andrew Welburn dumped a very early version of Jungle Hunt with different sound roms, similar to the set Darran dumped a few months ago.

- 0.133u1: Renamed (junglkj2) to (junglekj2) and (junglhbr) to (junglehbr).

- 0.131u1: Fabio Priuli fixed button 2 skips level in clone Pirate Pete.

- 0.122u5: Zsolt Vasvari fixed 2 player mode.

- 18th March 2007: Mr. Do - Thanks to the BYOAC Group Purchase, we have a Hi-Res bezel for Jungle King.

- 10th December 2006: Mr. Do - Thanks to the loan by Vintage Arcade Superstore, Jungle Hunt bezel has been added, vectorization by Zorg.

- 26th August 2006: Mr. Do - Added Jungle King bezel from MAME.net and Mean Arena. Some of these decent stuff are so-so; some are REALLY good.

- 0.96u2: Nicola Salmoria fixed sprite hardware collision detection. This fixes the last round in Pirate Pete.

- 0.92: Removed button 2 and 3.

- 25th February 2001: Filipe Estima added a Brasilian Jungle Hunt ROM set.

- 0.36b14: Zsolt Vasvari added Jungle King (Japan). Changed 'Jungle King (Japan?)' to clone '(Japan, earlier)'. Renamed (junglek) to (junglkj2).

- 22nd December 1999: Zsolt Vasvari added another Jungle King romset.

- 0.36b1: Added layer prom eb16.22.

- 0.35RC2: Changed description to 'Jungle King (Japan?)' and clone 'Jungle Hunt' to 'Jungle Hunt (US)'.

- 0.35RC1: Renamed (jhunt) to (jungleh).

- 0.31: Nicola Salmoria fixed missing/bad sound effects in Jungle King.

- 0.29: Nicola Salmoria added digital audio in the Taito games (used for some sound effects, most notably Tarzan's yell in Jungle King). Also, music plays in Jungle King. The hardware of the Taito games (Elevator Action, Jungle King, Wild Western, Front Line) is emulated more faithfully. Playfield priority is accurate in Jungle King, however this broke Wild Western - strange. Front Line works. Merged all the drivers into Taito driver [Nicola Salmoria].

- 0.28: Mike Balfour added high score saving to Jungle King.

- 0.27: Elevator Action, Jungle King and Wild Western now use the same Taito video hardware driver.

- 0.25: Nicola did some fixes to Taito Games (Jungle King and Elevator Action) about background placement and coins per credit dipswitch. Plus vertical scroll support in Jungle King (used in ground shake), correct sprite priority, and no more rubbish is present during change of stage. DELETE ELEVATOB\ELEVATOB.DSW, JUNGLEK\JUNGLEK.DSW, JHUNT\JHUNT.DSW, OTHERWISE THE GAME WILL NOT WORK CORRECTLY.

- 0.22: Added preliminary sound support to Jungle King. Tarzan yell scream sample missing. Is the pitch of sounds correct? Added gfx rom kn55.bin.

- 0.21.5: Nicola Salmoria fixed colors in Jungle King (I have some screenshots and colors doesn't match. BTW these are much better than previous). Finally Jungle King doesn't need to select the graphic bank, but still have some glitches on sprites.

- 0.21: Renamed (jungleh) to (jhunt).

- 0.18: Nicola Salmoria added preliminary support for Jungle King (Taito 1982) and clone Jungle Hunt. Slow but playable. I haven't the gfx bank selector switch, therefore the background graphics are not selected appropriately. Use C and V to change the gfx set. Control: Arrows = Move around and CTRL = Fire.
