radarscp1: MAME ROM Information.

History:

Radar Scope (c) 1980 Nintendo.

- TECHNICAL -

Radar Scope was available in 3 different dedicated cabinets. The upright cabinet was the same design used for the "Donkey Kong" series. It was red in color and had sticker side-art of a spaceship. The monitor bezel and control panel were designed to mimic the view from inside the cockpit of a spaceship. While the marquee showed an image of a blue and red 'Radar Scope' logo on a field of stars. The cocktail version came in a white-topped cabinet and was only decorated with an instruction card underneath the glass. The final version was a big environmental unit that completely enclosed the player inside (to better hear all that 'Laser Sound'). All the Radar Scope advertisements showed the environmental version. It used the same side-art as the upright, and had a 'Radar Scope' logo silk-screened on the back window. All versions used a 'Nintendo Compatible' Sanyo monitor.

Main CPU : Z80 (@ 3.072 Mhz), I8035 (@ 400 Khz)

Sound Chips : Discrete circuitry

Players : 2

Control : Joystick 2-way

Buttons : 1 (FIRE)

- TRIVIA -

Released in November 1980. This was the first game that Shigeru Miyamoto worked on, and it did not sell very well. Of the 3,000 games made, roughly 2,000 were converted into "Donkey Kong". This lead to two variations of Donkey Kong cabinets : the harder to find red cabinet and the traditional blue cabinet.

WIP:

- 0.141u2: Couriersud fixed a bug in palette_normalize_range which caused color distortion. The luminance normalization now converts r,g,b to y,u,v and normalizes y prior to converting back to r,g,b. This affects e.g. Radar Scope, Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.

- 0.138u2: Couriersud added a new cycle exact VMS interface to TMS5110 emulating M0, M1 and ADD1 to ADD8 lines. Added TMS6100 memory controller device. Also added TMSPROM device emulating Bagman and A. D. 2083 prom controlled speech logic. Switched Bagman, A. D. 2083 and Radar Scope (TRS01) to use the new interface and devices.

- 0.133u5: Removed 2nd Discrete sound in Radar Scope and clone (TRS01).

- 0.133u4: Added 2nd Discrete sound to Radar Scope and clone (TRS01).

- 0.133u1: Renamed (radarsc1) to (radarscp1).

- 0.127u5: Couriersud moved dkong memory_region calls (video\dkong.c) into initialization routines.

- 0.127u2: Replaced I8035 CPU2 with MB8884. Aaron Giles fixed Radar Scope hang or reset before game start.

- 0.123u4: Updated dkong driver to use two discrete structs which were previously not being used [Couriersud]: Radar Scope using a dkong 555 struct.

- 0.122u7: Changed I8035 CPU2 clock speed to 6MHz in Radar Scope and clone. Replaced TMS5110 sound with M58817 in clone Radar Scope (TRS01).

- 0.122u2: Couriersud fixed regression in Radar Scope sound. Radar Scope (TRS01) uses now TMS5110 speech synth. Also fixed Radar Scope game start (radarscp0122yel). Replaced M58817/Samples sound with TMS5110 in Radar Scope (TRS01).

- 0.122: Couriersud wrote a M58817 speech sound driver and hooked it up to clone Radar Scope (TRS01). The M58817 chip uses TMS5110 speech synthesis. LPC format is identical, however coefficients seem to be different. Until coefficients are known, samples are used. Added M58817 (640000 Hz) speech sound.

- 0.121u3: Radar Scope (TRS01) (radarsc1) is now clone of Radar Scope. Couriersud added speech support (samples) to Radar Scope (TRS01). Also added configuration switch to change palette between TKG02 (radarscp conversion) and TKG04 (dkong 2board).

- 0.116u3: Couriersud added Radar Scope (TRS01) (Nintendo 1980).

- 0.116: Couriersud implemented discrete sound, discrete background, various effects (blue to black to blue background, exact priorities and Grid will flip open and close, vertical flipping on hit) and color generation (resistor mixer) from schematics in Radar Scope. Fixed inputs. Replaced DAC/Samples sound with Discrete. Removed (dkong) samples. Changed VSync to 60.606061 Hz. Added dipswitches 'TP3' and 'TP5'.

- 26th November 2006: Mr. Do - We have a Radarscope bezel, thanks to the loan by Vintage Arcade Superstore and cleanup by Ad_Enuff.

- 0.86u3: Added samples (run01, run02, run03, jump and dkstomp.wav).

- 0.37b14: Replaced 8-way Joystick with 4-way.

- 0.36b13: Grid and stars in Radar Scope [Nicola Salmoria]. Added new gfx2 rom ($1800). Changed palettesize to 258 colors.

- 24th December 1999: Nicola Salmoria added some missing grid graphics to Radarscope.

- 0.36b11: Added dkong samples (effect00, effect01, effect02.wav).

- 0.35b6: Replaced I8039 CPU2 with I8035.

- 0.34RC1: Howie Cohen added high score saving to Radarscope.

- 0.34b1: Added color proms ($0, 100, 200 - palette low, palette high 4 bits (inverted) and character color codes on a per-column basis).

- 0.33b7: Changed description to 'Radar Scope'.

- 0.33b3: Known issues: Missing background grid (a la Juno First).

- 0.31: Andy White and Tim Lindquist added accurate colors to Radarscope (probably).

- 0.30: Andy White added protection workaround to Radarscope - Game now playable. 8039 emulator, and emulated sound in Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Bros. Since the boards also use discrete circuits to generate sound, some samples are still needed to get complete sound support. Also partial sound in Radarscope [Ron Fries, Dan Boris, Mirko Buffoni].

- 3rd November 1997: Dumped Radar Scope.

- 0.29: Nicola Salmoria added Radarscope (Nintendo 1980). Untested due to lack of good ROMs.
