If you are a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation, imagine that you are trapped in the middle of a Borg ship trying to find your way out. You not only have to figure out whether to go left or right, but up or down to different levels as well, all the while trying to avoid being captured by the Borg. Well, there are no Borg in this game nor fancy ship designs (sorry, but the ST just doesn't have enough computing power), but the maze concept is the same: a maze of passages carved out in three dimensions. Sound too easy? Try to make up such a maze on paper. It can't be done (well, not practically). That's what make computers such nifty tools. In order to solve a three dimensional maze, you have to trace your path from within the maze in a sort of simulator.
