The "grandfather" of the dungeon hack RPGs, Rogue has a long history dating back to the 1970s. It was first released as a test app for UNIX and quickly became popular among system administrators and students in computer science. It was a "test" so popular that enterprising UNIX administrators and users have distributed, developed, imitated and ported it to their personal computers.
Rogue is a single-player turn-based dungeon exploration by ASCII interface (that is, entirely in text or character-based). Its appeal lies neither in plot nor in riddles (both are thin as paper ... you are a treasure hunter), but in seemingly endless combinations of features, a wide variety of monsters and loot, and a randomly generated dungeon that guarantees infinite replayability.
