Chichén Itzá, like all the places that appear in this trilogy, exists in reality. It is located about 120 km east of Merida, capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan, in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula. Chichen Itza is the largest Mayan city that has come down to us, and it is very well preserved. It belongs to what has been called the New Empire, following the mysterious migration of the Maya to the Yucatan. It occupies an area of 5 square kilometres, and was erected around the 10th century AD on top of an older Mayan city, Ucyabnal, so it presents many mysteries to be solved. Even the etymology of its name is evocative of ancient legends, as Chichén Itzá is broken down into the following elements: "Chi" = mouth; "chen" = well; "itza" = tribe that occupied it. We would then have "mouth of the well of the Itza", or "on the banks of the well of the Itza".
