The First Retreat: November 1941 to December 1941
Covers the German thrust by the Leibstandarte Division that captured Rostovin late 1941, and the Russian winter counter offensive that recaptured it. The Germans were forced to retreat to the Mius River defensive line.
Operation Blau (beginning): June 1942 to August 1942
Covers the battle at the start of the German spring 1942 offensive that would carry them to Stalingrad and to the oilfields of Maikop. The offensive moved in two directions, east to Stalingrad and south towards Maikop. The Russians retreated to minimize their losses and stop the Germans prior to completely capturing either objective.
Army Group Don Retreat: January 1943 to March 1943
Covers the battle that was waged during the last days of the Stalingrad pocket, until the Spring 1943 thaw. Army Group Don held open the retreat route for the Caucausus units after the Stalingrad encirclement, desperately awaiting SS Panzer reinforcements from France. When the reinforcements arrived, von Manstein launched an attack. |
