| In Portal, the player controls a character named Chell in a first-person view who must traverse a series of rooms using a portal generator. This generator creates two distinct portals, one orange, the other blue on a flat surface made of moon particles. Neither of these is necessarily the entrance or exit, and any object passing through one portal will exit through the other, maintaining its speed. Portals cannot be created on all surfaces, but a failed attempt to create a portal will not affect portals already set up. The player can also pick up objects, but is not able to throw them long distances. These objects, often storage cubes, can be used to press switches to activate platforms or open doors, or to shield against turret fire, but these cubes cannot be carried from room to room. |
