Bubble Bobble tells the story of two humans, Bub and Bob, who wander into a mysterious monster lair and magically transform into dinosaurs. The only way to transform back is to reach the end of the lair.

Bubble Bobble is a platform game where each level consists of a single screen. Enemies must be cleared from one level to advance to the next. The player can jump and collect items (e.g., fruit) to score points. Bub and Bob's true power is their ability to blow bubbles. These bubbles can be used as platforms to jump on or to capture enemies. Enemies trapped in a bubble must pop by jumping into the bubble, after which they transform into fruit.

Many power-ups float randomly by in bubbles. These include lightning bolts that fly horizontally toward enemies and water that pulls players and enemies down across platforms. If you take too long to complete a level, Baron von Blubba will be summoned, who will hover across the screen and try to catch the player.
