Treasure Island is a text adventure adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic 1883 novel of the same name. Unlike the book, the game is written in the second person. Otherwise, it faithfully follows the original plot: The player assumes the role of Jim Hawkins and must perform the same actions as the character in the novel.

This creates a more claustrophobic atmosphere, as players, unfamiliar with the book, must guess what happens next. To compensate for this, other characters act as a built-in hint system. The player can ask them all sorts of questions, and they will provide clues when they have them. The parser supports most standard Infocom features such as pronouns and string commands.
