Rogue is a turn-based dungeon crawler in which the player controls an adventurer who must explore the dangerous Dungeon of Doom to find the valuable Amulet of Yendor. The player character starts at the top level and slowly works his way down. The game uses ASCII characters to represent locations, objects, monsters and the protagonist himself. There are 26 different types of monsters, symbolized by their first letters (e.g. L for Leprechaun). Monsters have different abilities and attack modes. Each dungeon level contains a grid of three by three rooms and dead ends. The levels become increasingly complex and labyrinthine and the monsters become stronger the deeper the hero goes into the dungeon. The player character can purchase better weapons and armor, gain experience points and level up. If the player dies in the dungeon, he has to start the game again.
