Shogun is based on the Japanese board game Hasami Shogi. Pieces may move only forward, sideways, or backward, never diagonally. They can move to an adjacent empty square or jump over any adjacent piece – whether friend or foe – but the jumped piece is not captured. A piece is captured when it is squeezed between two of the opponent's pieces, horizontally or vertically, and then removed from the board. A piece is not captured if it moves between two enemies on its own. Traditionally, the winner is the one who captures all of the opponent's pieces, but this version also offers optional victory conditions, such as capturing a set number of pieces within a limited number of turns.
