Smash is a Breakout clone, where the player must bounce a ball to destroy bricks and keep it from falling off the bottom of the screen. The paddle is controlled with the touchscreen; the player can drag his finger to move the paddle, or tap the screen to quickly move the paddle there. There are two game modes, Challenge and Arcade. Challenge mode contains 120 levels divided into 6 "galaxies", and clearing out all bricks on a level unlocks the next one. The Arcade mode consists of a single level, with new bricks constantly appearing at the top of the screen, and the only goal to accumulate as much score as possible before a game over.

As usual in Breakout games, the playfield contains bricks of various types, which need a varying number of hits to be destroyed. There are also bonuses dropping down from destroyed bricks, such as multiple balls, temporary lengthening of the paddle, or creating a barrier at the bottom of the screen. Other things dropping down include harmful pickups which shorten the paddle or make it move backwards, and "M" points. The latter can be spent to buy upgrades that increase the number of lives available on a level, or improve the function of the bonus pickups.
